Vanitas 11 update (07-25-2017)

The hair and the top 1/2 of the fabric have been rendered. Now I can do the rest of the fabric, make some minor adjustments and this piece will be done.

A little experiment in pastel

I tried a pastel drawing on muslin mounted on gesso board just to see how this surface would take the medium. It was easier than I had expected. This study is 6" x 6". I think I can work big next time.

Vanitas 9 done! (10-30-2016)

I finally finished Vanitas 9 after a month of trying to figure out how to render the texure of black velvet. I decided to work on just the top of the fabric the strongest light was hitting. Less is more.

The orchid is nearly finished. Next I am going to work on the fabric covering the lower half of this composition.
