Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 01:50PM I have been working on this drawing diligently. The rendering of the figure and the skull is pretty much done. Now I am working on the hair, then am going to move onto the fabric at the bottom. I am still not 100% sure how to treat the background yet...

Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 07:29PM I took a few months break from Vanitas series, but today I went back to work on this drawing I had started back in January this year. I am thinking about using an experimental technique for rendering this piece. Not sure if it actually works, but will see... I have so far shaded the part of the figure with 4H and 3H leads and ready to move on to darker leads now.
Friday, February 17, 2017 at 08:57PM I tried a pastel drawing on muslin mounted on gesso board just to see how this surface would take the medium. It was easier than I had expected. This study is 6" x 6". I think I can work big next time.

This is going to be another graphite drawing. With the last one Vanitas 10, I enjoyed the process of filling in the entire background with graphite shading and I decided to repeat the process with this new piece.

It's a little bit stepping away from the original concept as well as from my previous version of vanitas theme, but it still conveys the sense of transient nature of beauty. I am going to add more fine details to the leaf and fill up the entire background with shading in graphite.
