Ohio Arts Council Riffe Gallery Show

I got my Vanitas 23 accepted into the upcoming Ohio Arts Council's biennial show at Riffe Gallery. I'm glad that I get to show this drawing in public for the second time following the show in Cincinnati. I have shown many of my drawings and photographs online but seeing the actual art works in person is obviously a completely different experience. I think this piece deserves that chance.

Vanitas 27 update (05-08-2021)

In the middle of rendering the background. When I use a photo reference like this for my art, the memory of being there and witnessing things years ago comes back. I remember the day I photographed this wall in Castello area in Venice, Italy. We saw an old man in a wheelchair and his son standing next to him by the edge of the canal watching the water go by and their smiling faces. I get to relive the experience.

Vanitas 27 update (04-30-2021)

The fabric is done. Now I can move on to the background. I am going to reuse the same wall I photographed in Venice but only a different portion of it, and alter the exposure to create a darker background. The final dimension of this drawing is 16" x 19".

Vanitas 27 update (03-27-2021)

This is what the drawing looks like today. I finally made up my mind about the treatment of the background. The original reference photo has just a plain gray background and I found it kind of boring. Then I discovered another photograph of a wall I took in Venice that will work perfectly with this piece. It is very similar to the one I have used for 2 of my Vanitas drawings but from a different location. What would I do without Venice?
