Vanitas 9 done! (10-30-2016)
I finally finished Vanitas 9 after a month of trying to figure out how to render the texure of black velvet. I decided to work on just the top of the fabric the strongest light was hitting. Less is more.

The orchid is nearly finished. Next I am going to work on the fabric covering the lower half of this composition.
I finished the figure part of this drawing. Now moving onto the orchid.
I started a new drawing for Vanitas series a few days ago. Just like the last piece, this is done in pastel on black charcoal paper. The size is 20" x 16". I like this composition a lot. I came up with this final design by collaging 3 different photos together, using the best part of each image.
Line drawing copied onto a sheet of black paper from the composite photo sketch.
After adding a general wash of brown orchre.
The face is pretty much done and I have moved onto the body. At this point, before adding any tonal nuances, I laied down 3 different colors to create the basic skin tones.
This drawing is almost finished. It just needs more fine tuning of values of the fabric. It is a large full sheet (22" x 30") drawing in charcoal. I originally thought about mixing other mediums with charcoal but decided not to do it, keeping it straightforward. So far I am satisfied with what I got. Working in charcoal, it was very nice to be able to finish a drawing in a few days instead of a month and half!
