Stonybrook Charles B. Wang Center Paper Craft Workshops Updates

I worked on 3 paper craft workshop videos for these past few days. I just finished editing the last one and uploaded it to Google Drive to share with the Stonybrook University Charles B. Wang Center. Now I can take a breather and relax a little. The Center made an announcement of my workshops on their website as below. It's official now. For these workshops, I had to alter my original designs to fit the Center's concept and the direction of the workshops. First, I was a little reluctant to do so, but as I was working on them, I realized actually the altered versions were much more marketable because of the smaller sizes and the simpler designs. I am glad they asked me to do so.

Strokes of Genius 12

I just received an email from DRAWING Magazine telling me that my piece "Vanitas 18" was one of the winners for Strokes of Genius 12 competition. This is my second winning following last year's with "Vanitas 11". I am honored to be included in a group of fantastic artists. The winning entries will be published in a book that's coming out late November this year. Can't wait to see the book in person!

Back to Stonybrook (well, sort of)

Curator of Stonybrook University Charles Wang Center Jinyoung emailed me the other day and asked me if I was interested in doing a few workshops in fall this year. They will be online workshops of paper crafts. I accepted the offer and started working on them. I went to Stonybrook 5 years ago to be part of a group show Origami Heaven. This time I will not physically be back there but still it was nice to be able to do something for them again. Here are a couple of shots of animal nightlight projects I am planning on doing workshops on.

Vanitas 23 work in progress

I have been working on this graphite drawing for over a month now. It is roughly 24" x 18" and slow going. Technically this is another challenge: rendering of the lace of the blouse and the soap bubbles floating in the air, although I am kind of enjoying drawing the bubbles. I accidentally grabbed a wrong paper for this piece and that's also making the whole process more challenging than working on my usual go to material: Bristol board Vellum surface. I just finished laying down the basic tones of the background by rubbing the graphite powder with the areas of bubbles masked out with the masking fluid. I hope I can finish this before the end of July.

Virtual My Studio Show at Sharon Weiss Gallery

A few days after the opening of Bryn Du Show, I was invited to be a part of a group show at Sharon Weiss Gallery. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the show had to be turned into an online only exhibit. The theme was artists' free interpretation of their work space/studio. I had a few different ideas, but none of them was exciting enough to turn into a piece. So I decided to take a simple approach and depict an object in my work space at home: a dog skull. This is the link to the gallery. And here are a couple of screen captures from the Youtube video the Gallery produced.
