Anna-Wili Highfield

While surfing the web looking for anything related to Paper Birds, I came across this Australian artist Anna-Wili Highfield. Her animals are made of paper over copper wire armatures. The way she incorporates hand-torn edges of paper is just elegant and beautiful. The poses of the animals captured in a moment of suspension are just exquisite and truly evoke the sense of movement and energy. Here is the description of her work on her web site.

Anna-Wili's sculptures are stitched together from archival cotton rag. Her works explore the organic qualities and resistance of paper, generating a tension between the complex realism of form and the limitations and economy of the materials used. They represent animal life in an immediate way that conveys the energy, movement and physical character of different creatures. Her aim is to engineer a moment of contact with nature in a way that emphasises both the startling differences and similarities of human and animal forms and consciousness.

Kinetic Sculpture of Tim Prentice

Here is my latest favorite sculptor: Tim Prentice. His sculpture reminds me of one of the contents of an art class I and my former coleague Peter Rasmussen tried to design one time at Columbus College of Art & Design before Peter retired: art work that moves by the force of natural elements. In Prentice's case, it is the force of wind. His work represents a perfect marriage between mathematical precision and an element of chance. Aesthetically elegant and incredibly sophisticated. His work is so mesmorizing, I could easily watch these pieces move all day long!

Here is a short video on his work and his philosophy by Corey Shaff.

"Paper Monsters and Curious Creatures" in progress

My next new book "Paper Monsters and Curious Creatures" is moving along. Today I received the first laser print out. I am going to go through this page by page for the next few days and make necessary corrections. This book will come out some time in the fall of 2014. As a teaser, below are Just a couple of pages from the book in progress. Love the backgrounds of these 2 projects!

"Paper Birds" in progress

I just finished proofing the 1st laser print out of my upcoming paper craft book "Paper Birds". Good folks at Lark Books worked so hard to squeeze in as many projects as possible, but due to a smaller page number of this book than that of my previous "Paper Pups", they could only put in 29 projects. Well, I guess that's good news to my readers. They will have more free online bonus projects! Here are snippets of the book pages in progress. The release date of this book is June 3rd 2014.

"Naked" show

I am in a group show called "Naked" by the faculty of Columbus College of Art & Design. The show was curated by our former Dean of Faculty Char Norman. The show is currently going on at Hammond Harkins Galleries in Bexley, OH. We had a opening reception last Friday 10/18. It was packed with people and a great success. It was really nice to see so many people I hadn't seen for quite a while. I am planning on going back there soon and take some photographs of the exhibit.
