Graphite on Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper, 24"x16", 2023.
My model Laelia is holding a cast plaster head of a woman which is part of a sculpture by an Italian artist Venbenuto Cellini. The background was a wall texture of Ochanomizu train station in Tokyo I photographed when I was back in Japan 2022.
I think this piece talks about one of the age-old questions: a relationship between our physical reality on earth and beauty we experience in the form of art. They say art is long, life is short, but when you think about the subjective nature of experience of art, the opposite is also true. What art means to you changes as you go through various phases of life.
